WHAT HAVE VICTORIAN LIFE, AN OLD HOTEL IN FLORIDA, A CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN NOEL COWARD AND DOROTHY PARKER AND A 1937 LIFE RECORDING FROM NEW YORK THAT BECAME AN INSTANT HIT IN PARIS ALL TO DO WITH EACH OTHER? THERE IS ONLY ONE ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION: GODSPEED THE WELL-DRESSED MAN.

Godspeed the Well-Dressed Man is a small men’s label based out of New York. Its sole designer, Greg Climer, started out as a pattern maker and draper for film and Broadway before he moved over to fashion, working with people such as John Bartlett, Karl Lagerfeld and Imitation of Christ. The love of fashion history his the driving force behind Greg’s designs, which resulted in his own line in Fall 2005. Greg is strongly influenced by the craft of making clothing and the progression of fashion through the centuries. Influences you can find back in his collections.

The current Fall06 collection finds its inspiration in Victorian menswear, but in a modern way, taking the starch out and making the fabrics more comfortable. The line looks very decorative, but is functional at the same time. So have the shirts removable collars, and several pieces have a high amount of pockets.
Godspeed the Well-Dressed Man drew its inspiration for the Spring07 collection from the Langford Hotel, that opened on December 1950 in Winter Park Florida. The Langford – at that time one of the first to have air conditioning and ultra chic lounge style - became a popular hangout for the coolest of the cool during the height of lazy summer holidays and James Bond style back in the 60s. At the moment the hotel closed its doors for the last time on May 30, 2000, it hadn’t changed much. It had never been redecorated, most of the regulars had stories of sharing drinks with Elvis and Sinatra. Those memories of 60's chic, modern life, and the nostalgic wear-n-tear of age created the collection. Its filled with soft, broken in fabrics, playful riffs on old-school style, and touches of modern life (like the reflective glass infused trim on a rubberized flannel coat).

With Godspeed the Well-Dressed Man Greg Climer assembled a small team of dedicated and gifted people around him, and together they bring all of Greg’s design to life. Oh and the name ? Well, that came from the closing line in that letter from Noel Coward to Dorothy Parker back in the 20’s, which became the title of the song that Robin Bontecou sang during her only life recording in New York. It is a reminder of the dedication of Greg’s team to history, proper menswear and above all: wit. –B-
