ALL THROUGH HISTORY, THERE HAVE BEEN MEN AND WOMEN WITH VISIONARY IDEAS, THAT PROVOKED A LOT OF PROTEST OF LESS ADVENTUROUS PEOPLE. WHEN THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPHS CAME TO EXISTENCE, PEOPLE LOOKED UPON IT WITH DOUBT AND ANXIETY. WHEN DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CAME TO EXISTENCE, THIS TECHNOLOGY TOO WAS BAULKED AT. LITTLE DID WE KNOW THAT DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY WOULD BECOME A NEW ART AND BRING TO LIFE A SOCIETY OF MODERN MAGICIANS. AND AYMERIC GIRAUDEL IS A MAGICIANS MASTER.
34 years old Aymeric Giraudel is exactly what you would expect if you study his work closely. He is sensitive and friendly, a dreamer and a poet. Aymeric originates from the French Bordeaux area and currently lives partly in Bordeaux and London.
From stylist to costume designer. From dancer to graphic designer. And eventually photography. How did this all come to happen?
Aymeric: Since my childhood I have tried pretty much everything. Whatever discipline, if I feel comfortable it encourages me to keep going and to express myself. I have a very curious nature and am eager to learn. I didn’t follow any study in any specific school, had no training in any task. I am 100% self made. So I worked in different areas, but I always fins myself back in visual expression.
Your photos are complete. Each image seems to tell a story. What is it that you are trying to communicate through your work?
Aymeric: I like to present the things that touch me. That tell me an emotion. A feeling or a specific state of mind is vital for me. I like complete visual that don’t need anything else to exist. Self sufficient and surprising. I put a lot with symbolism in my work, like the old painters from the Renaissance. It gives different meanings to my photos, makes them sometimes mystical or adds a surrealistic dimension to it that allows me to describe my point of view on the modern world. I see my work as windows into a particular universe, frames you like to pass through just out of curiosity.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Aymeric: Music is my first inspiration. It allows me to dream while being awake, presents me visions of my future work. It is like a trance, like being completely cut off from the rest of the world. Traveling is also a source for dreams and emotion. I also find inspiration in the things that are happening in the present world. Even violence and pain, things we don’t understand, can be the base of a piece of art.
Needless to say you have created a unique style in your work. Why did you choose this kind of photographic art?
Aymeric: I honestly don’t know if I have created a unique style. I don’t read any press or watch TV since 3 to 4 years. Between you and me, I really don’t think I have created a complete new style. It is digital photography and photo retouch that currently allows us to create work without limitations. Possibilities are endless, and for me this is a magnificent tool, unbelievable… -B-
