LIKE YOU AND ME, ARTISTS ARE HUMAN BEINGS, WITH HUMAN BEINGS NEEDS, WISHES, SENSATIONS, EMOTIONS AND DRAMAS. AND SOMETIMES SOMETHING HAPPENS TO THESE PEOPLE WHOM WE THINK WE KNOW THROUGH THEIR WORK, THAT ALL OF A SUDDEN MAKES THEM EVEN MORE HUMAN AND CLOSER TO US.
If you ever took a look at magazines like Advocate Men, Freshmen or Torso, or books like Hardball or One For The Gods, you most likely have been, consciously or unconsciously, exposed to the wonderful art of BEAU. BEAU is the pseudo, the the creative name of a talented painter/photographer, who resides in Los Angeles, USA. BEAU is French for male beauty, and thus, judging by the artists work, it is a well chosen name.
In one of his (auto)biographic statements, BEAU refers to the sentence 'You must be joking’ as one of the things he remembers hearing. Oddly enough it has become a phrase that has haunted him through his life and career. In 1992 BEAU started painting male nudes for publicity. Like all of us, BEAU’s biggest wish of life is life itself…a good life that is. And his definition of a good life is a cocktail of good friends, good food and good sex. Or, as he says himself: "Who would decline an invitation to life's grand discotheque? I certainly didn't. Why should you?" That attitude is exactly what you can find in his art, which reflects rich deep colors, dramatic narratives, handsome iconic men and a Hollywood glamor definitely inspired by his earlier experiences working as a costume designer for 20th Century Fox.
BEAU is a man with the right look on life, the right look on male beauty and the right spirit. And that is what saved him in the period after his dramatic car accident in 2002, when he realized he would not be able to express himself though paintings any longer (you must be joking). Instead of giving up, BEAU found another medium through which he could express his creativity: photography. For now, let’s focus on BEAU’s wonderful paintings, also collected in two beautiful books published by Bruno Gmünder: BEAUMEN and BEAUMEN2. –B-

BEAU (as he prefers) is a really sweet guy. I was very surprised and flattered when he first emailed me congratulating me on my own artbook. I've had the pleasure of corresponding with him since.
I'd admired his work for sometime. His is the kind that I not only appreciate looking at but study and analyze with a curious eye, inspirational.
