IF YOU EVER NEEDED ANY MORE ENCOURAGEMENT TO FINALLY GO TO THE GYM AND WORK THAT BODY, FOR SURE PEDRO VIRGIL’S LATESTS ADDITION OF REAL-ATHLETES-GO-NAKED ART WILL DO THE TRICK. WE ALREADY SAW THAT IN HIS NAKED FOR A CAUSE 2008 CALENDAR. AND NOW HIS LATEST BOOK RELEASE GODS OF SPORT PUSHES THE BAR EVEN A LITTLE BIT FURTHER.
In most countries football refers to one major sport. In Australia, football can mean many things. One of them is the Naked For A Cause Calendar 2008 (see BeautifulMag | Naked For A Cause). An other is the latest Bruno Gmunder production Gods Of Sport, which is an exclusive collection of unseen material taken for the calendar. As professional football players – regular young men who trained hard for years to perfect their bodies and strength – it could be said that these sportmen represent the pinnacle of virile, masculinity in our society. Photographer Pedro Virgil has portrayed them in a way that reflect that masculinity and has been able to capture the natural, unassuming virility of these real Aussie ‘footy players’ photographically.
With elegant poses and vivid coloring, Pedro Virgil has been able to fill more than 200 pages full of testosterone-laden tension holding images of these gladiators of our time, making them look as tough as they are. The calendar Naked For A Cause had as purpose to raise money for The McGrath Foundation, and Australian based charity which funds breast care nurses for women diagnosed with breast cancer and also campaigns to educate young women about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Like the calendar, proceeds from sales of Gods Of Sport benefit the foundation.
Pedro Virgil's Gods Of Sport is once again a beautiful photobook published by Bruno Gmunder. The book comes in hardcover edition with 224 full color pages, and will be available as of March 2008. –B-
