"THERE ARE STORIES ALL AROUND US THAT NEED A VOICE TO TELL THEM. I TRY TO TEASE THE STORY OUT OF EACH SHOOT. MY BIGGEST FEAR IS THAT THERE WON’T BE ENOUGH TIME FOR ME TO PRODUCE ALL THE STRIKING IDEAS THAT CONSTANTLY WHIRL AROUND IN MY HEAD." - Ryan Colford, photographer.
Everybody is unique, but Ryan Colford adds another dimension to that idea by living in New York City as one of those rare people who were actually born and raised there as well. On top of that he describes himself as being a ‘weirdness magnet’ and it is the combination of living in the crazy city and ending up in crazy random events that paint his style and adaptability. Ryan has worked in various industries, varying from retail to advertising and beyond, which explains his love for the commercial and fashion image.
Ryan Colford is fairly new in photography and completely self taught, and his favorite subject is people. It’s that interaction that I truly love. "I’ve met some great people who were an absolute joy to shoot," he says. "When you get that trust and that click, the results are nothing short of fantastic!" Ryan finds his main inspiration in music and books. Music being the force to create atmosphere and emotion, and books because they taught him to weave story lines and create compelling images.
Passionate as he is about his self learned profession, Ryan is already preparing the publication of his first book, which will be entitled Glimpse Of Man. He has spent countless hours and energy shooting some of the most beautiful men for this ambitious project, which, once finished, will be a response to our culture today. Ryan explains: "The male form has been so de-sexualized with ill fitting clothes and attitudes, whereas the female form is hyper-sexualized. By exposing the male body both nude and clothed, I strive to remove those layers of deception. The imagery that I create is proud, vulnerable, tender, and strong but at the heart it is the unabashed celebration of male sexuality. On the whole, I find our society and American viewpoint forgets that the male form is an object of desire and beauty. This book is really about my vision and drive to break that taboo."
Glimpse Of Man is not yet released but will be released this year. The exact release date is not set, but should be within the next couple of months. It should be available online (Amazon & Barnes/Noble) as well as signed limited editions through Ryan Colford’s website. –B-
