IN CONTRARY TO MANY EUROPEAN CITIES, BILLBOARD ADVERTISEMENT IN MEXICO CITY IS STILL DOMINATED BY IMAGES OF BEAUTIFUL WOMEN. MUCH TO THE DISPLEASURE OF PHOTOGRAPHER GERMAN ARMENTA. NOT THAT HE DOESN’T LIKE IT. IT IS JUST THAT HE BELIEVES THAT MALE BEAUTY CAN DO THE SAME THING, AND MAYBE EVEN MORE. WE COULDN’T AGREE MORE.
Germán Armenta, born in Mexico City, has always been draw to visual themes. Already as a kid he didn’t go anywhere without his sketch book and a box of crayons, drawing everything he saw around him. Family, friends, pets, nothing was safe for the observing eyes of young Germán. At the age of 10, his older brother gave him a camera. Maybe it was the intention to escape from Germán’s creative sketch exploration, but if that was the case, it didn’t really work out. On the contrary. Germán discovered with his camera a whole new universe of catching moments and interesting images and it didn’t take long before his camera became his new box of crayons.
Germán’s illustration skills came in handy after he finished college. At that time Mexico was in a deep economical crisis, and Germán could only find a job as an illustrator for a womenswear company. This introduced him to the world of seasonal trends and colors, and, driven as he was, Germán soon started to create his own designs. For 13 years he worked in the fashion industry until, 3 years ago, he could no longer resist the urge to return to photography, find new inspiration in the male figure.
After years of working in a women’s fashion world, dominated by sophisticated accessories, high heels and make up that all together can create divine-like personalities, Germán realized that a man can look equally beautiful without any additional advantages. This understanding made Germán decide to start a all male inspired project, which he named PICSESSIONS. Picsessions allowed Germán to explore the beauty of men. Placing his subjects against rough architectural backdrops enforces that raw masculinity and creates a fascinating contrast and places the strength of the male body in a vulnerable light. We don’t know what happened to Germán Armenta’s family drawings, but for sure he found himself a good substitute. –B-
PICSESSIONS | BEAUTIFUL

These are very 1980's and not particularly fasionable. The models looks nice, but the photographer uses that old, boring trick people have used and over-used since the 1960s, dubbed "I'm bored and sad"-pictures by some, with his male models gazing at something in the distance, holding themselves ect.
The pictures are okay .. but he's 40-50 years too late.

OMG I do so NOT agree with that first comment. I think these photos are superb. As the writer says, the contrast of these beautiful bodies against that rough background. The black and white. The melancholic feeling to it. The whole series is just breath taking.

I'm not agree with that first comment, these photos are timeless, I don't find any relation with 80's or 60's, what is really boring is H. Vincent Lukas point of view!

I think that his images capture the male form at their most vulnerable state. The photos do not look posed. He has captured a moment in the lives of these men. The backgrounds are raw and rough and contrast well with the masculine forms and soft lighting. AMAZING WORK! Truly Inspired.
