When you hear the term Renaissance, most people will automatically think of the enlightening period of rebirth that found its origin in Italy in the 14th century and spread through Europe in the three centuries to follow. But the fact is, there are more renaissance periods in our history than most people are aware of. The Carolingian Renaissance for example, a period of intellectual and cultural revival, that occurred in the late eight and ninth century, and the Renaissance of the 12th century, a period of social, political and economic transformations during the High Middle Ages, which witnessed the origin of European universities, revival of Roman law Greek science and philosophy and gave birth to Gothic architecture.
But let’s go back to that 300 year period of awakening that would become the bridge between the Middle Ages and the Modern Era. It was a period of great revival of learning based on classical sources that saw many intellectual changes in just as many areas. It is a historical period that witnessed much political and social upheaval, but eventual became most known for the artistic revolutions by men like Leonardo Da Vince and Michelangelo. Both men were true Renaissance men in their time, setting great examples for many others to follow, and are still a source of inspiration for modern artists.
If we follow the many threads in the pattern of history, we can conclude that every know and then we go through periods of rebirth, and renewal. Nowadays, when information and knowledge is available for everyone and new developments follow each other in astronomical speed, it is hard to say whether we are in a Renaissance period or not. Photography is one of the new forms of art, and as once Da Vinci and Michelangelo handled their paint brushes and sculptor tools, now we know masters in the art of photography like Eric Schwabel, Joe Oppedisano and Jerrad Matthew. Eric presents us a direction in his photography that is new and refreshing in its simplicity, showing the true beauty of men, Joe is a man who is in constant evolution of his style, and brings us a series of portraits that, like back in the Renaissance, is based on classical characters but recreated in a typical Oppedisano style. And Jerrad is a typical modern day Renaissance man, mastering techniques necessary in the creation of beautiful art, but seldom handled by one person at the same time. In other words, we are convinced that we too, in our 21st century, are living a period of great creation, renewal and rebirth. It truly is a new dawn. and Michelangelo handled their paint brushes and sculptor tools, now we know masters in the art of photography like Eric –B-
