Rio is a place of contrast. The people in this famous Brazilian city are very conscious of their physical appearance and work hard to maintain good form. Rio is almost built on the beach and thus it is pretty normal to see men and women walk in town in nothing but their swimwear. It is a habit that has created a sexual myth around the city and Brazilian lifestyle that couldn’t be further from the truth. Totally nudity is still very taboo in Brazil.
Between 2001 and 2009, photographer Frank Waldecker has dedicated his time to photographing the most stunning men from Rio de Janeiro in their most casual and natural form. Shying away from superficial beauty and over developed muscle masses, he selected his subjects on their beautiful faces, enticing smiles and almost an almost naïef sensuality. Those men, those wonderful portraits, are now all assembled in one magnificent photo book, named The Boys from Ipanema.
Frank Waldecker, born in Germany, held his first camera at the age of 12. When older he studied graphic design and worked in this capacity for publishing houses in Hamburg and Munich. In 1989 he visited Brazil and immediately fell in love with the country. Currently Frank spends 4 months of the year in Rio de Janeiro. Frank waldecker published a first calendar in 2003, named Beach Boys, which has been followed with 20 more that feature his work, internationally published. In Brazil he works with the best agencies for fashion and art models ans, besides his calendars, he has seen his work being published as postcards and books, as well as in international magazines such as cosmopolitan and Glamour.
The Boys of Ipanema is a 128 page, hard cover photo book with 130 stunning black and white photos. The text is written in English, German, French and Portuguese. The Boys from Ipanema is published by Edition Skylight. –B-
