80 YEARS OLD AND STILL FASHIONABLE THE BARCELONA CHAIR WAS EXCLUSIVELY DESIGNED FOR THE GERMAN PAVILION AT THE 1929 WORLD EXPOSITION THAT WAS HELD IN BARCELONA. HENCE THE NAME OF THE CHAIR. THE METAL FRAME GIVES THE CHAIR A STRONG AND MASCULINE LOOK WHICH IS THAN HARMONIZED WITH COMFORTABLE WIDE LEATHER WRAPPED CUSHIONS. THE CHAIR WAS SHOWN OF PERFECTLY IN THE ENVIRONMENT OF THE MODERN BAUHAUS PAVILION, AND EVEN THOUGH ROYAL VISITORS WERE NOT CHARMED BY THE DESIGN, IT SOON ATTAINED THE REPUTATION OF BEING A DESIGN WORTHY OF KINGS.
The Barcelona Chair has successfully withstood the test of time and seems to be more popular than ever. It is seen as an iconic Bauhaus object but that is a bit paradoxic. Bauhaus artists were intent on providing well-designed homes and furniture for the common men. The Barcelona Chair is anything but that. You could compare the Barcelona Chair with the iMac. Both are pieces of design, but without ever loosing their true functional reason of being. The same goes for men. There are a lot of them but only a few are meant to stand out, to become iconic for what men are all about. To be transformed into pieces of art without transcending into something more than what is was original meant to be.
Dutch photographer Gert Kist is lucky enough to have two of above mentioned collectors items, and we wouldn’t be surprised to hear he also has an iMac. If you have followed our articles about Malemodel.nl, you probably already noticed Gert’s usage of his Barcelona Chair in some of his series. We have to admit, it fits perfectly in his modern interior with panoramic view. And now it is perfectly harmonized with Raoul.
Like the Barcelona Chair, Raoul is a rough mix of materials polished to perfection. His father origins from Suriname and his mother is Dutch. The result is Raoul’s very exotic looks and well defined physique. Like the Barcelona Chair Raoul is strong and elegant, beautifully designed but with an almost feminine finesse, but a functional purpose that couldn’t be more masculine. Raoul is a carpenter. And that makes Raoul an object of desire, crafted to perfection. There are many men, but there is only one original Raoul. Just like the Barcelona Chair. –B-
