Did we just sketch the impossible? The ideal live everybody dreams of but no one believes it could ever be true? Well, think again. Because it is a reality for Ray John Pila. He did all that and it gets even better. Because after having lived his life 20 years in Hawaii he moved to the continent where he settled down in West Hollywood. There he currently makes a living in graphic design and web design, enjoys also designing shirts and has been able to built quite an impressive photographic portfolio. It seems a perfect life and almost too good to be true. And thus we decided to ask him about perfection. And here is what he said.
PERFECT INSPIRATION
Ray: I get inspiration from my art, I also get inspiration from music, playing piano and try to adapt that in my photography with lighting and poses.
PERFECT STYLE
Ray: I mostly shoot guys because there faster, just roll them in dirt and shoot. ☺ I like Bruce Webber a lot and Herb Ritts. So I try to add my own spin on that.
PERFECT MODEL
Ray: Good face, nice body, sex appeal........ good hair is better, usually models with an interesting look. Five advises for new models: 1. practice you poses 2. practice your expression 3. have a good body 4.beauty comes from within, so be beautiful inside too, 5. follow the golden rule.
PERFECT SHOT
Ray: I try to make a composition out of each image and use different angles. I usually find I move the model around a lot to get better images. Make the model feel comfortable and have a connection, that makes a good shot. The final shot has to be great, OK is not good enough.
PERFECT LIFE
Ray: Asides from photography? ☺ Going to the beach. Having a BBQ with friends and fall asleep under the stars. I enjoy, hiking and playing piano, cooking gardening, I have like 2 billion plants – lol.
PERFECT ATTITUDE
Ray: Life is full of rejection. It’s hard but you just gotta move on. And so I do. I usually say 20 rejections for 1 acceptance... I just prepare for it.
PERFECT REWARD
Ray: One of my models once said I was this favorite photographer in the whole world – lol.
PERFECT RAY JOHN PILA ?
Ray : Ha ha ha… I’m a Cancer, like long baths, love jin rummy and am left handed. Oh, and I’m afraid of spiders… -B-

There is a frequently used phrase, "Don't let the perfect become the enemy of the good." Well, in the case of Ray John Pila, perfection is ubiquitous, and it is very, very good indeed. His black and white photography is absolutely stunning, assisted in no small measure by the gorgeous models he has decided to capture for us. I look forward to seeing much more of Ray John Pila's fantastic work in the future.
